The Department of Orthopedics at Medical University-Varna Obtained a New-Generation Modern Ultrasound Machine

The Department of Orthopedics at MU-Varna obtained a new-generation modern ultrasound machine, specially equipped for application in the musculoskeletal system. It will be used for surgical orthopedic interventions as well as for research and training activities at the University. Such a high-generation apparatus that is traditionally used in elite clinics in Europe has been introduced in Bulgaria for the first time. The new apparatus allows for highly specialized diagnostic and preoperative activities, and operative interventions under ultrasound control.

The first surgery performed by the doctors was achillotomy under ultrasound control. Achillotomy is a part of the treatment of a club foot, but with the help of the new apparatus, specialists obtain accurate information on the preciseness of the intervention and the outcomes.

"All of us at the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology are extremely happy. We will use the ultrasound machine for pre-operative and post-operative screening, in major bone surgeries, in pre-operative planning of shoulder, achilles and hip pathology, as well as in emergency traumatic injuries. The apparatus also provides an undoubtedly precise picture in early hip screening," said Prof. Dr. Dimitar Raykov, Head of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic at MU-Varna.
