The University of Lisbon will be a new academic partner of the Medical University of Varna

On October 11th 2019, the Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Lisbon and Head of the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital Prof. Dr. Fausto Pinto visited MU – Varna. Prof. Pinto is in Varna to be a speaker at IXth Conference “Varna Echo” and took the opportunity to get acquainted with the Faculty of Medicine at MU - Varna.

He was welcomed by Prof. Todorka Kostadinova – Vice Rector for International Relations and the guest presented the main priorities and trends in the activities of the leading Portuguese medical faculty. 25 000 students are currently trained in it, together with around 750 PhD students and postdocs from all over the world. Prof. Pinto pointed out that the development of the fundamental sciences has been a traditional strength of the Lisbon University as well as neuroscience, oncology and simulation training. He emphasized that, as a leader of the faculty, he is aiming at integrating the clinical and the research groups, thus ensuring the real implementation of translational medicine.  According to Prof. Pinto, the future of medicine lies in the establishment of academic centres in which academic faculty staff, the university hospital and a research institute work together.

In their turn, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Zlatislav Stoyanov and Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Yoto Yotov familarised their colleague with the structures, achievements and the priorities in the training in medicine at MU- Varna. The representatives of the two universities found fields of common interest such as cardiology and cardiosurgery, joint development of curricula and syllabi in medical disciplines, involvement in joint research teams of PhD students and postdocs.

The representatives of the universities in Lisbon and Varna agreed that the medical science and training cannot be advanced without the collaboration among universities and they will sign an agreement for exchange and mobility within “Erasmus+” programme. To meet the specific needs and the closer cooperation between the departments a bilateral agreement will also be signed for academic partnership.
