Training and Seminar on "The History of Pharmacy in Varna"

Training and a seminar on "The History of Pharmacy in Varna" has been conducted at the Museum of the History of Medicine for the second consecutive year. Organisers and hosts were the Department of Organisation and Economics of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Pharmacy at MU - Varna and the Museum of the History of Medicine at MU - Varna.
The event, which was attended by lecturers, students and guests, was held within two days – on 13 and 14 December.

During the first day of the seminar Assoc. Prof. Evgeni Grigorov from the Department of Organisation and Economics of Pharmacy presented the new exhibits in the historical collection of the newly created showcase, dedicated to the history of pharmacy in Varna, which is located in the lobby on the 8th floor of the Faculty of Pharmacy. Pharmacy students presented their research. They had had the opportunity to study books made available to them by the Library of MU-Varna, as well as to find intriguing facts from the not yet investigated archives of the Museum of the History of Medicine, where a small part of the treasury of medicine is preserved.

On the second day of the seminar students and guest-lecturers shared their memories and presented studies related to the history of pharmacy in Varna. The famous local historian and expert in the history of our city Christian Oblakov presented the topic "The Pharmacies of Old Varna", and Assoc. Prof. Anna Todorova, head of the Department of Organisation and Economics of Pharmacy, shared curious facts about "The History of Drugstore Hristo Nikolov - Varna”. First year pharmacy students presented the topic "The First Private Pharmacy in Varna after 10thNovember 2019". The lecture, delivered by Assoc. Prof. Evgeni Grigorov, entitled "The Oldest Recipe Collection at the Library of MU-Varna, Published in 1884" provoked a huge interest.

After the successful beginning in November 2018 on the occasion of celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the Faculty of Pharmacy, the organisers' ambition is to turn the event into a tradition. Their concept is to make it a venue for exchange of information and sharing reminiscences, as well as for discussing curious facts and events from the history, and the development of pharmacy and drugstores in the city of Varna.
