He graduated from the French department of the IV Language High School "Frédéric Joliot-Curie", Varna, in 1989.
In 1995, he graduated from the Medical University of Varna with a degree in Medicine.
In April 2005, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic of "A Complex Study of Autonomic Disorders in Parkinson's Disease", and in July 2005, he was appointed, after a competition, as an assistant professor at the Department of Neurological Diseases of the Medical University of Varna.
In 2006, he acquired a specialty in Neurological Diseases, and in 2007, he was elected as a chief assistant professor.
Dr. Ivanov has specialized in Geneva and Brussels. His main scientific interests are in the fields of movement disorders, dementias, demyelinating diseases, and neuro-oncology.
He participates in the Bulgarian and foreign language neurology training of medical and dental students at the Medical University of Varna. Dr. Ivanov is in charge of EMG training as a highly specialized activity.
Dr. Ivanov has over 150 full text publications and scientific reports. He is the sole author of the monograph "Nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson's disease" and is a co- author of one monograph.

He is a co- founder and member of the Board of the Bulgarian Association of Neuro-Oncology, member of the Bulgarian Society of Neurology and the Bulgarian Association for Movement Disorders.
