The Department of Pediatric Dentistry was established as an independent entity in July 2013, having evolved from the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Pediatric Dentistry. This Department is actively engaged in a comprehensive educational curriculum, encompassing a full cycle of lectures and practical exercises for both students and postgraduates in dentistry. The core scientific focus areas include propaedeutics of pediatric dentistry, dental prophylaxis, epidemiology of childhood oral diseases, early childhood caries, modern methodologies for managing caries and its associated complications in both temporary and permanent dentition, injuries to both temporary and permanent pediatric teeth, periodontal diseases prevalent in childhood, and oral mucosal diseases affecting children.
The Department utilizes the outpatient facilities of the Faculty of Dentistry, which are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, training and seminar rooms, and clinical exercise spaces, along with contemporary materials and methodologies.
A segment of the Department's teaching faculty is involved in the National Program for the Prevention of Dental Diseases in Children throughout Bulgaria. All educators contribute to various preventive initiatives related to oral hygiene, fluoride prophylaxis, and health education. The Department comprises four habilitated instructors, eight senior assistants, and four assistants. The department has completed twelve dissertations for the educational and scientific degree of "Doctor" and one dissertation for the scientific title of "Doctor of Sciences". Presently, the department supervises three full-time doctoral candidates and four active postgraduate students.
