Speciality "X-ray Laboratory Assistant" at the Medical College of the Medical University - Varna was opened in 2001 under a Bulgarian-Swiss project between Medical University - Varna and Medical University of Basel and the Cantonal Hospital in Aarau, Switzerland . Through the project, for the first time in the Medical College, the modular principle of training was introduced, in which theoretical and practical training are organized in a way that facilitates the preparation of future specialists, giving them the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and habits. This model has proven its applicability over the years, reflecting in the excellent preparation of students for their future realization and competitiveness on the labor market. The specialty prepares medical specialists with qualifications necessary for the sectors of "Imaging Diagnostics", "Nuclear Medicine and Metabolic Therapy" and "Radiation Therapy". Graduated X-ray laboratory technicians have the opportunity to work in the country and abroad in both state, municipal and private healthcare institutions, where, with high-tech modern equipment, they can independently or under the guidance of a specialist doctor, apply various methods and techniques for imaging diagnostics and radiotherapy - conventional X-ray diagnostics, ultrasound diagnostics, as well as highly specialized techniques: computed tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance tomography and interventional methods and techniques. Methods and techniques in nuclear - medical diagnostics and metabolic therapy - PET CT are also mastered, as well as modern methods for radiotherapy of oncological diseases with linear accelerators and radiosurgery.
Clinical training is conducted in modern accredited training facilities. The curricula are constantly renewed and updated, due to the rapid development of medicine and in particular imaging diagnostics and radiotherapy. Teaching methods comply with modern European requirements. Students have the opportunity to participate in student mobility under Erasmus+. Graduated X-ray laboratory technicians can continue their studies to acquire a bachelor's or master's degree in the specialty "Healthcare Management" and "Information Technologies in Health and Health Care".
