Anton B. Tonchev has graduated in Medicine at the Medical University – Varna.
He has done his PhD work at the University of Kanazawa, Japan, studying neurogenesis and gliogenesis in monkeys following cerebral ischemia. He has been postdoctoral fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Goettingen Germany studying genetic mechanisms of adult neurogenesis.
Since 2012 he has served as a Chair at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in Varna, and since 2018 – as a Director of the Research Institute of the Medical University – Varna. His group in Varna is studying the brain stem cell niches with a focus on primates and humans.
