Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Zhivkov Georgiev, MD, was born on 4.05.1960 in Provadia and graduated from high school in Provadia (1978) and medicine at the Higher Medical University in Varna (1986). He acquired the specialties "Internal Medicine" (1992) and "Cardiology" (1995), as well as a professional qualification in "Invasive Cardiology" (2003). He specialized in Bulgaria and abroad (France, Paris) in the field of interventional cardiology. He began his professional career as a resident in the Internal Medicine Department of the District Hospital in Turgovishte (1986–1987). He held successive positions of assistant professor at the Clinic of Cardiology and Rheumatology of the Department of Internal Medicine (1987–1992), Sr. Assistant Professor (1992–1996), Chief Assistant (1996–2003). He defended his dissertation on "Determinants of mitral Doppler blood flow in healthy young people" in 1999, became an associate professor at the Department of Internal Medicine (2003), and since 2016 he has been a professor of cardiology at the Medical University - Varna.
Prof. Georgiev is a long-time head of the Department of Internal Medicine (2007–2018). He is the founder and first head of the Clinic of Interventional Cardiology at the University Hospital "St. Marina" – Varna. He is currently part of the clinical and teaching staff of the Educational Sector of Cardiology at the First Department of Internal Medicine. Under his leadership, 5 doctoral studies and over 20 specializations in cardiology have been successfully defended.

On June 16, 2023, by an absolute majority of the General Assembly, Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Georgiev was elected as the 14th Rector of the Medical University - Varna.
He has over 100 scientific publications, over 110 participations in scientific forums, two successfully completed international projects. He has published a monograph: "Current Problems Related to Percutaneous Coronary Interventions" (2016). He is a co-author of the specialized textbook "Vascular Ultrasound" (2015) and is part of the editorial team of the translated edition "Principles of Schwartz's Surgery". His scientific developments are in the field of left ventricular structure and function, heart valve pathology, coronary pathology and its treatment.
