Teaching of Medical Genetics for medical students in Bulgaria was introduced for the first time at Higher Medical Institute - Varna in 1969 by Prof. Dr. Mariya Tsoneva. The Training and Research Sector (TRS) Medical Genetics at the Department of Pediatrics and Medical Genetics was established in 2000.
Diagnostic and consulting activities of TRS Medical Genetics are based at "St. Marina" University Hospital - Varna, and it works in close collaboration with the founded in 2003 Medical and Molecular Genetics Laboratory, headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lyudmila Angelova. This well established and actively operating structure is a highly specialized unit, working exclusively for the region, servicing patients from eight areas of northeastern Bulgaria. The unit conducts screening activities, it is involved in maintaining the national genetic register, and is used as a base for doctor specialization in the country and abroad, and provides methodological assistance to other genetic laboratories in the country.
