Since 2002 the Head of the ES of Abdominal Surgery is Prof. Dr. Rosen Madjov, PhD. prof. Р. Madjov is a student of prof. Chervenkov. He defended his thesis under his supervision in 1999 on the complications of gallstone disease and repeated operations on the biliary tract. He specialized in Israel, Greece, Germany, Italy. He was elected associate professor at the department in 2002.
From 2004 to 2012 prof. Р. Madjov was two terms Vice-Rector for Research at the Medical University - Varna.
In 2008, he defended his dissertation on biliodigestive anastomoses for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences.
In 2009 he was elected Professor of Surgery.
The scope of surgical activity includes the whole abdominal pathology - biliary and hepatic surgery, pancreatic surgery, splenic surgery, surgery of the stomach, small and large intestine, surgery of the anterior abdominal wall. The number of hospitalized patients and surgeries is growing every year (on average 900 - 1,000 surgeries of medium, large and very large surgery per year). In recent years, surgeries of the highest order have been performed - pancreatoduodenal resections and pancreatectomies, liver resections, gastrectomies, hemicolectomies, block resections.
Prof. Dr. R. R. Madjov, Ph.D. and Assoc. Glinkov, M.D. have been approved as national consultants for providing highly specialized consultative and methodological assistance in surgery for Northeastern Bulgaria.
The Board of Abdominal Surgery conducts the training of students of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year of medicine - lectures, seminars, practical exercises, semester and state examinations.
Training in surgery and in English is provided for medical students - 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year; and for dental students - 3rd year.
The Board and the Second Clinic of Surgery at St. Marina" is a base for specialization of doctors from the country (mainly Northeastern Bulgaria) and abroad (trained and acquired a specialty in surgery doctors from Macedonia, Albania, Turkey, Palestine, Iran). Short-term thematic specializations are also organized.
prof. Р. Majov is a member of the state commission for the specialty examination in surgery and general medicine.
Since the establishment of the clinic, four Ph.D. theses, two dissertations for the Ph.D. degree and two dissertations for the Ph. There are currently two PhD students on independent dissertation work.
The research activities of the Board are multifaceted. The priority topics that have been focused on in recent years are as follows:
pancreatic surgery - acute and chronic pancreatitis;
neoplasms of the pancreas;
liver surgery - primary and metastatic carcinoma, echinococcosis;
gallbladder and extrahepatic bile duct surgery;
neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract;
hernias of the anterior abdominal wall;
emergency conditions in abdominal surgery.
In recent years alone, the Clinic's collaborators have authored more than 20 articles in foreign and more than 80 in Bulgarian medical journals; 12 textbooks and manuals on surgery for students, postgraduates and surgeons; participated in 6 rationalizations.
Collaborators in the Board have more than 200 papers at national, international and world congresses on surgery. They have held short-term thematic specializations in renowned foreign clinics and departments of surgery - in Germany, Switzerland, Israel, Greece and Russia.
