The history of the educational and scientific sector /UNS/ of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition began in 1976, as part of the united Department of Internal Medicine /IM/, including six specialized clinics/educational sectors. The first head of the Department of IM was Prof. Dr. Konstantin Koychev, MD. Prof. Dr. Georgi Varbanov, MD. was the head of the Clinic of Gastroenterology and of the UNS from 1977 to 1994, and from 1995 to 2015 - Prof. Dr. Iskren Kotsev, MD. After 2015, the head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, successively part of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Second Department of Internal Medicine was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irina Ivanova, MD. Since October 1986, UNS has been based at St. Marina University Hospital. As of May 2026, the Unit of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition will be established as an independent department.
