The main issues to which the overall research activity of the staff of the Department is dedicated are in several main areas – neuro-oncology, including modern structural and functional neuroimaging diagnostics, paraneoplastic syndromes; issues of early diagnosis, comorbidity, and complex treatment of multiple sclerosis, screening and differential diagnosis using MRI, SPECT, and PET in neurodegenerative diseases; neuroepidemiology of dementias; diagnostic and therapeutic problems in movement disorders, dysautonomia in Parkinson's disease; new approaches in the study of language functions in brain injuries; neuro-ophthalmology, modern morphological and functional imaging diagnostics of epilepsy, neurogenetics, cerebrovascular diseases (prognostic significance of polysomnography in acute cerebrovascular disorders, invasive and non-invasive diagnostics, endovascular treatment in acute cerebrovascular disorders, treatment of cerebral edema with hypothermia), polysomnographic changes in patients with ischemic strokes; development of a program with the help of interdisciplinary teams for the treatment of patients with respiratory disorders in some neurological diseases, muscle monitoring of critically ill patients, respiratory disorders in neuromuscular diseases, plasmapheresis and plasma exchange in autoimmune diseases of the nervous system, application of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in movement disorders – Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia, application of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in patients with chronic pain syndromes.
The multidisciplinary scientific potential is reflected in the annual output of scientific publications, reports, monographs, and co-authorship in textbooks on neurology for students and residents. The Department's team forms the core of the Scientific Society of Neurology – Varna branch, and of the first-ever in Bulgaria established – Association of Neuro-Oncology, as well as of the Bulgarian Association of Neurosonology and Cerebral Hemodynamics. It organizes and conducts, under the aegis and with the support of the European Federation of Neurological Societies and the European Association of Neuro-Oncology, in cooperation with Medical University – Varna, highly acclaimed scientific and educational forums.
The faculty members are involved in and work on international clinical trials for the treatment of various nosological entities (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, dementia, epilepsy, cerebrovascular diseases), which is a basis for ensuring continuous qualification in line with the latest global diagnostic and therapeutic advances and a recognition of the high quality of teaching and diagnostic-therapeutic activities in the department.
