The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery was established in March 1962 (the same year as the founding of the Military Medical Academy of Varna). Initially located at the former Primary Regional Hospital "Dr. Racho Angelov" in Varna (now "St. Anna" Hospital, Varna), the department included a dedicated Neurosurgery Clinic (Academic Division of Neurosurgery). During its development over time, the clinic has become an integral part of the university community, recognised for its highly specialised medical services and strong scientific and educational potential.
The Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Diseases was founded in 1964, originating from the ENT ward of the Primary Regional Hospital "Dr. Racho Angelov" in Varna (now "St. Anna" Hospital, Varna). Dr. G. Papurov was the first assistant professor appointed at the department's inception, followed by Dr. R. Nikolov and Dr. Y. Staychev, who joined after 1968. Until 1972, the department lacked a permanent head and was overseen successively by Prof. Dr. P. Altankov (Department of Surgical Diseases) and Prof. Dr. N. Konstantinov (Department of Ophthalmology).
In 1972, Prof. Dr. I. Dimov, former head of the ENT Clinic at “ISUL" Sofia, was appointed as the department's head. From 1976 to 1993, the department was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. G. Papurov, a graduate of the Military Medical Academy of Sofia (1953), who became an Associate Professor in 1976 and a Professor in 1987. After 1977, the department expanded with the addition of assistant professors, including Dr. B. Banova, Dr. R. Mutafova, and Dr. D. Marev, PhD, followed by Dr. Pl. Nedev and Dr. Y. Rusev, who joined after 1986.
Following 1993, the department was successively led by Assoc. Prof. Y. Staychev, Prof. Iv. Tzenev, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Iv. Nachev. In 2005, the Department of Otolaryngology became part of the Department of Neurosurgery, ENT, and Ophthalmology, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. D. Marev, PhD, as its head.
