The research activity of the Department of Nephrology, Hemodialysis and Toxicology is focused on the development of modern nephrology, improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, and implementing innovative approaches in clinical practice. The department actively combines scientific work with educational and clinical-diagnostic activities, thereby creating conditions for the development of a highly specialized academic and clinical environment.
The department team participates annually in national and international scientific forums, congresses, symposia, and conferences with poster and oral presentations presenting the results of scientific research and clinical studies. Some of the scientific presentations have received prestigious awards and recognitions, strengthening the department's authority in the field of nephrology and renal replacement therapy.
Faculty members of the department are authors and co-authors of numerous publications in Bulgarian and international peer-reviewed scientific journals. The scientific output includes original articles, review papers, and clinical analyses related to current issues in nephrology, dialysis treatment, and transplantation medicine.
The department actively participates in the development and implementation of research projects funded by the Science Fund and other national and international programs. Research activities are aimed at introducing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic methods, as well as improving the quality of life of patients with chronic kidney diseases.
The main research areas of the department include:
- Investigation of the etiology, pathogenesis, and contemporary therapeutic approaches in glomerular diseases;
- Application and improvement of extracorporeal blood purification methods – hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, apheresis, and peritoneal dialysis;
- Kidney transplantation, immunosuppressive therapy, and long-term follow-up of transplant patients;
- Nutrigenomics, clinical dietetics, and metabolic disorders in patients with chronic kidney diseases;
- Development of diagnostic algorithms and modern screening methods for genetic kidney diseases and hereditary syndromes;
- Studies on cardiovascular risk and complications in patients with chronic renal failure;
Application of ultrasonographic and imaging methods in the diagnosis and follow-up of kidney diseases.
The department encourages the active participation of young physicians, residents, and PhD students in research activities by creating opportunities for academic development, participation in international scientific networks, and exchange of professional experience.
