The study of medicine as a science requires an excellent knowledge of the structure of the human body. Up to now, there is no artificial model created in the world that is able to simulate all the details and individual variability in the features of the human anatomy.
Since 2016, the “Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology" at MU-Varna established a voluntary body donation program for the needs of anatomical education of undergraduates and medical specialists. Thanks to these “first teachers", future medical doctors receive the best knowledge needed to become excellent professionals. Upon completion of the program, the donors' remains are buried with honors.
In 2025, MU-Varna inaugurated a memorial MORTUI PROSUMUS VITAE (Even in Death we serve Life), as a symbol of the academic community's appreciation for the noble sacrifice of those who donated their bodies for the advancement of medical science and education.
*According to Bulgarian legislation the program “PROSUMUS VITAE" can accept voluntary body donations only from Bulgarian citizens.
