Office of Technology Transfer and Innovation

The Office of Technology Transfer and Innovation (OTTI) was established at the Research Institute of the Medical University - Varna (MU-Varna) by a decision of the Academic Council dated April 20, 2022.

What is technology transfer?

Technology transfer (TT) is the movement of knowledge and discoveries from the research environment to society for the benefit of society. This occurs in many ways, but, for the purposes of this guide, technology transfer refers to the formal licensing of MU-Varna's intellectual property (IP) to third parties, whether established industry players or new startups.

What is intellectual property?

Intellectual property (IP) describes property that originates from human intelligence. In the context of MU-Varna, this includes any new and useful processes, machines, compositions of matter, life forms, devices, software, copyrighted works, tangible property, everything in the field of biotechnology, diagnostics, clinics, pharmaceuticals and healthcare. It is created when something new and useful is conceived or developed, or when unusual, unexpected or non-obvious results obtained with an already existing invention can be used for some useful purpose.

The main tasks of OTTI are:

  • Support and coordination of the provision of legal and administrative protection of IP and innovation management for researchers at MU-Varna;
  • Conducting an analysis of the needs of researchers at MU-Varna regarding their readiness and need for assistance in creating IP (i.e. registration of patents, utility models, industrial designs, trademarks, copyright registration, documentation and registration of university "know-how", etc.);
  • Informing and consulting on the possibilities for implementing pilot projects for TT in business and TT by university scientists and experts to business;
  • Organizing trainings on creating IP, TT and related activities ;
  • Assisting in the process of IP registration (starting with the submission of the Invention Disclosure Form, IDF) and licensing of specific medical services. IDF is an active PDF that must be filled in by the inventor and sent by email to OTTI.

The OTTI team includes experts in the fields of innovation, intellectual property protection, finance and capital markets: Vasil Karaivanov and Kostadin Gramatikov .

Our mission at OTTI is to bring the benefits of academic discoveries at MU-Varna to the world and to translate science into practice. This starts with you, our inventors, whose research expands the boundaries of innovation and creates hope for humanity.

Thank you for your interest in OTTI — it is a privilege for us to be your partner.
