The Department of Foreign Language Teaching, Communication and Sports is the successor of the Department of Foreign Languages, which expanded to the Department of Foreign Language Teaching, Communication, Pedagogy and Sports in 2001.
Since 1998, the Department has traditionally organized and held every three years prestigious international theoretical and practical scientific conferences on applied linguistics in Bulgaria with a focus on research in the field of scientific and professional development, professional realization and business through a foreign language, linguistic, sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic and cultural aspects of specialized language learning, forms of e-learning in foreign language education, medical communication, etc.
In the period 1962 - 1992, the head of the department was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liliana Dimitrova, who was awarded the “Blue Ribbon Badge of Honour".
In the period 1995 - 2001 the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages was Prof. Dr. Violeta Tacheva, who was elected Director of the Department in 2001 and remained its Director until 2014. She was awarded the highest distinction “Honorary Badge with Blue Ribbon" in 2014 by the management of the Medical University and in 2018 she received the Varna Award for establishing Varna as an international and national cultural and academic center, for the comprehensive popularization of the Bulgarian language in Europe and for her scientific excellence in the field of higher education.
In the period 2014 - 2022 the Director of the Department is Prof. Dr. Ivan Merdzhanov, who has over 60 publications and participations in scientific conferences.
Since 2022 to date the Head of the Department is assoc. prof. Ilina Doykova who has over 45 publications and textbooks in English and Bulgarian for medical purposes.
