Why are we named after Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov?

In 2002 Medical University - Varna was named after Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov. In the history of Bulgarian medicine, he has been renowned as the person who laid the foundations of the first Bulgarian School of Surgery.

Prof. Dr. Stoyanov was the first in our country who started taking X-rays. In his practice he implemented diverse operational activities - in the field of abdomen and bone surgery, gynecology and eye diseases. He was recognized as the first doctor in the country who managed to perform a complicated surgery on a wounded heart.

Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov lived and worked in Varna between 1905 and 1918. Here he established a Children Sea Sanatorium for Tuberculosis of Bones and Joints, which was the only one of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula. Prof. Dr. Stoyanov gained a worldwide recognition as one of the founders of Thalassotherapy (Seawater Therapy) and Heliotherapy (Sun Treatment). He urged persistently, "Bulgarians should turn to the sea and start using its values!"
