DEPA​RTMENT OF WESTERN AND CLASSICAL LANGUAGES 

DEPARTMENT OF SLAVIC LANGUAGES AND COMMUNICATION 

The Departments provide training in foreign languages for special purposes and medical communication to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students from all specialties at Medical University-Varna as part of the compulsory and elective curricula. Since 1990, preparatory courses in Bulgarian language for foreign students and postgraduates, as well as preparatory courses in English for medical specialties have been organized in the Department on demand. 

The teaching activities of the Department cover annually between 9 000 and 11 000 academic hours in the disciplines: 

Latin medical terminology

Foreign languages for specific purposes (English, German)

Foreign language for communication in the clinic (English, German)

Bulgarian as a foreign language and for academic purposes – levels A1, A2, B1, B2

Bulgarian as a foreign language and for academic purposes – preparatory course;

English as a foreign language and for academic purposes – preparatory course;

Business Communication and Communication Skills for Senior Management;

Academic English – levels B2, C1

Scientific writing in English

Lecturers of Bulgarian, Latin and English/German for Medical Purposes have authored their own curricula, syllabuses, vocabulary and test materials, developed and updated annually 1996-2025. They have been involved in more than five international projects.

 

 

Prof. Violeta Tacheva was awarded Varna Individual Aw​ard  in 2018 for her scientific and creative achievements, teaching activities in the field of linguistics and her overall contribution to the establishment of Varna as an international language centre. 

 

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL TRAINING AND SPORTS 

With the establishment of the Varna University of Medical Sciences in 1962 the student sports club "Medic" was founded, the first teachers being Maria Bozhkova and Ivan Ivanov. By the decision of the Academic Council of the Varna University of Medical Sciences, the Department of Physical Education and Sport was established with the head of the Department being senior lecturer M. Bozhkova. In March 2001 the Department was incorporated into the Department of Foreign Language Teaching, Communication and Sports. Since 2007 the head of the Sports Department is Julieta Videnova. 

The sports included in the curriculum are aerobics, basketball, boxing, sailing, volleyball, folk dancing, general physical training, swimming, tennis, table tennis and football. Professional coaches work with the basketball, boxing, volleyball, track and field, swimming, tennis, handball and soccer teams. A student folk dance group “Diana" practices and promotes Bulgarian folklore, as well as a cheerleading group is established in 2022. Physical education is a compulsory academic discipline for students of all specialties of the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health and Medical College – Varna. 

The championship title in the comprehensive ranking of Varna Universiade, second place in the National Student Championship, second only to the NSA and first place in the Summer University Sports Games were won in 2022, which makes it the most successful year in terms of sports in the 63-year history of MU-Varna.
