History and facts

The Department of Biochemistry is founded in 1962. Over the years, it existed as a separate department or section within the Department of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry or the Department of Preclinical and Clinical Pharmacology, Chemistry and Biochemistry. Since 2007, it is separated as a Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine and Nutrigenomics, headed by Prof. Diana Ivanova, Dr.Sci.Biol. The Laboratory of Nutrigenomics, Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals operates within the department. The current academic staff is 15 people (2 professors, 2 associate professors, 3 chief assistant professors and 8 assistant professors). Besides them, there are 2 biologists, 2 biochemists and 2 sanitarians.
