History and Facts


With the founding of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Medical University “Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" – Varna, the former Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology had to be divided into two structures – Department of Preclinical and Clinical Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine and Educational sector of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Department of Preclinical and Clinical Sciences in the structure of the Faculty of Pharmacy. The Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacotherapy was established as an independent unit within the structure of the Faculty of Pharmacy in 2015, headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marieta Georgieva, MD. In the period 2018–2024, the Department is headed successively by Prof. Dr. Petko Marinov, MD and Prof. Kaloyan Georgiev, MSPharm, PhD, DSc. Since 05.2024 Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacotherapy is Assoc. Prof. Maya Radeva-Ilieva, MSPharm, PhD. As of April 2025, the academic staff of the Department consists of 11 people, of whom 7 are habilitated and 4 are non-habilitated.

The Department provides training in the following disciplines: “Pharmacology", “Toxicology", “Pharmacotherapy", “Basics of Clinical Pharmacy" and “Introduction to Medicine"  for pharmacy students; “Toxicology" for medicine students; “Pharmacology"/“Toxicology" for students from the specialties “assistant-pharmacist", “medical laboratory assistant" and “x-ray laboratory assistant" at the Medical College of MU-Varna. The following doctoral programs are accredited to the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacotherapy of the Faculty of Pharmacy: “Pharmacology (incl. pharmacokinetics and chemotherapy)" in professional field 7.3. Pharmacy; “Toxicology" in professional field 7.3. Pharmacy and “Toxicology" in professional field 7.1. Medicine. The Department trains postgraduates in the following specialties: “Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy", “Clinical Pharmacy", “Pharmacology", “Toxicology and Toxicological Analysis", “Toxicology". Over the past 10 years, over 10 doctoral students have successfully defended their dissertations at the Department, and over 20 postgraduates have successfully passed the state specialty exam.​
