SCIENTIFIC AND RESEARCH ACTIVITY

The Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacotherapy works in the following main scientific areas: 

  • In vitro and in vivo study of drug interactions;
  • Clinical-pharmacological and toxicological study of Bulgarian probiotics;
  • Study of lipid emulsion as a means of treating acute intoxications with lipophilic drugs;
  • Study of basic toxicological characteristics - acute and prolonged toxicity, toxic threshold, dose-effect relationship;
  • Chromatographic analysis of drug substances in biological samples;
  • Application of population pharmacokinetic modeling in preclinical drug studies;
  • Isolation of substances of natural origin and study of their biological activity and organoprotective effects;
  • Study of preventive effects of natural monoterpenes on memory disorders (Alzheimer's disease) through experimental animal models;
  • Drug toxicology;
  • Description of clinical cases with therapeutic and toxicological focus;
  • Medicinal use of antibiotic antimicrobials intended for the treatment of surgical infections.

A modern laboratory for liquid chromatographic analysis of medicinal products, natural biologically active substances and toxic compounds in samples of different origin, including biological fluids, was built at the Department.

Over the past 15 years (2010 - 2025), the members of the academic staff of the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacotherapy have published over 150 scientific articles, of which over 50 have been published in journals indexed by Web of Science and/or Scopus (over 40 with IF). The number of participations in various scientific forums with presentation of a report or poster is over 250, of which over 150 in national and over 90 in international. The citations of the members of the academic staff of the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacotherapy are over 1300 in total (Google Scholar).

The members of the academic staff are authors and co-authors of a total of 5 textbooks, 11 monographs and over 15 teaching aids. In the period 2010 - 2025, the members of the academic staff participated in over 15 research projects.
