Born on October 28, 1981 in the city of Shumen. He completed his higher education, bachelor's degree, at Shumen University "Bishop Konstantin of Preslav". In 2006, he obtained a master's degree in "Organic Chemistry" at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". During his studies, he started working as a chemist at the Institute of Organic Chemistry with the Center for Phytochemistry (IOCCF) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). Later, at the same institute, he was enrolled in a regular doctoral program on the topic "Modification of zeolite type MCM-22 with a view to its use as a catalyst for the conversion of alkylaromatic hydrocarbons", which he successfully defended in 2011. He continued his career in the laboratory of "Medical and biological research" at the Institute of Molecular Biology "Acad. Rumen Tsanev", BAS. Since 2013, he has been appointed as a teacher at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Medical University "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" - Varna. He is a lecturer in the disciplines of Organic Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. In 2022, he acquired a specialty in Toxicology.
The areas of his scientific interests and research are primarily focused on: the synthesis of new organic, inorganic and hybrid materials, incl. nano-, meso- and microstructured objects; sensory and organic qualitative and quantitative analysis; heterogeneous catalysis; infrared spectroscopy and a number of other interdisciplinary chemical-biological, physical and pharmacochemical directions.
Of particular interest to Iliyan Kolev are questions related to the analysis of alkaloids and pharmacopoeial units bearing nitro groups.
Author and co-author of/in scientific manuscripts presented in one of the most prestigious chemical and pharmaceutical international periodicals - Talanta, International Journal of Pharmaceutics, Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, Journal of Molecular Structure, etc.
