Our beloved and respected Prof. Dr. Todor Stoyanov Ganchev, DSc, left us at the age of 90.
Prof. Ganchev was born on 30 December 1931 in Plachkovtsi, Gabrovo Region. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Higher Medical Institute in Sofia in 1957 and acquired the specialty of Physiology. Between 1958 and1961 he was a municipal doctor in the village of Belokopitovo, Shumen Region, and from 1961 to 1963 he was a senior inspector at the National Health Department in Shumen. He became an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physiology of Medical University – Varna in 1963. He was awarded his habilitation as an Associate Professor in 1978, and as a Professor - in 1991.
He defended a dissertation thesis entitled "On certain issues of adrenergic regulation of erythropoiesis and erythropoietin activity in rats" in 1975, and a doctoral thesis on "Erythro- and thrombocytopoiesis and hormonal and adrenergic-mediated influences" in 1990.
One of his Assistants was habilitated, and two dissertation theses were defended under his supervision. He was a co-author and an editor of scores of teaching aids. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal "Scripta Scientifica Medica" – Varna, of the Republican Management of the Society of Physiology, and of the Specialised Scientific Council of Physiology, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology.
The entire academic community and the representatives of the medical profession mourn the loss of the personality, the doctor, the lecturer Prof. Dr. Todor Ganchev.
