New Natural Antioxidant Food Supplement Developed by a Team of the Faculty of Pharmacy at MU - Varna

A scientific team of the Faculty of Pharmacy and a research team of a pharmaceutical company have developed a new food supplement with a rich antioxidant complex that stimulates memory, concentration and work performance. The supplement bearing the trade name CitoDeOx is already available for patients at the pharmacies of MU - Varna. This initiative is based on the proposal of Prof. Dr. Silva Andonova, D Sc, and the teams of the Departments of Pharmaceutical Technologies and Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine and Nutrigenomics of the Faculty of Pharmacy. This has been the second food supplement developed by a team of MU - Varna.

CitoDeOx is a dietary supplement that is rich in natural antioxidants and vitamins. It helps the normal function of brain cells, strengthens the cell membranes of blood vessels, and facilitates the formation of connections among neurons. Recommended dosage is 1-2 tablets per day after meals within one month. CitoDeOx contains citicoline, rosehip (rosa canina) extract standardized to 70% vitamin C, green tea leaf extract and aronia melanocarpa fruit extract.

Citicoline has been extensively studied in a number of memory-related clinical trials. Brain neurons that recognise this compound play an essential role in the process of learning and maintaining memory. Citicoline can help brain cells prevent the accumulation of various toxins and increase the effectiveness of their functioning. It helps brain functions and provides energy needed for mental activity and concentration. It favours the central nervous system in injuries resulting from obesity, smoking and alcohol abuse and improves eye health.

Aronia improves blood flow in the blood vessels – arteries and veins, as anthocyanins maintain the elasticity of the blood vessels. Iodine content in the fruits of the plant is 3-4 times higher than that in the other fruits. It strengthens memory and improves concentration.

A number of scientific studies prove the beneficial impact of green tea extract on the prevention of brain diseases. Polyphenols result in lowering the levels of cortisol (stress hormone) and neutralising heavy metals. Green tea acts as a brain stimulant, gives a strong energy boost, helps concentration and improves mood. It has a beneficial effect on the entire cardiovascular system, while also facilitating muscle recovery after physical efforts.

Since vitamin C deficiency is considered a risk factor for cerebrovascular diseases, choosing a natural source to maintain its levels in the body is of key importance. One of the richest in vitamin C natural extracts is that of rosehip. It is an excellent tool for strengthening and fully functioning of the circulatory and immune systems, thyroid gland and brain. Rosehip extract improves overall health, slows down ageing processes and has an antioxidant action. It helps relieve nausea and headaches.

The team of scientists from the Faculty of Pharmacy is currently finalising its work on the development of a third food supplement, which will bear the logo MU - Varna.
