Representatives of Medical University – Varna Participated in an Online Meeting with Commissioner Mariya Gabriel


A virtual meeting with Commissioner Mariya Gabriel focused on STEM education, digitalisation and digital skills took place on 17 September 2021. Key issues related to the opportunities and challenges in the field of STEM education were raised during the meeting. What are the prerequisites for successful interaction among schools, universities and business so that they are part of an ecosystem that meets the expectations of young people and the needs of the labour market?

A key lecturer at the meeting was the Executive Director of CERN – Dr. Fabiola Gianotti, who presented the mission of CERN aimed at training future scientists and engineers.

Among the other participants in the discussion were the Rectors of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski“, University of National and World Economy (UNWE), University of Economics – Varna, Thracian University, “Angel Kanchev” University of Ruse, Technical University –  Sofia, Plovdiv Affiliate, South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, as well as principals of high schools from Sofia, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Blagoevgrad and Ruse and business representatives, including the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), Junior Achievement Bulgaria and the Association of Young Scientists in Bulgaria.

Prof. Todorka Kostadinova took part in the discussion on behalf of Medical University – Varna. She presented the projects and initiatives that are being developed by MU – Varna in the field of medicine, digitalisation and artificial intelligence, as well as part of the University’s partnerships at regional, national and international level.

Consensus was reached on the importance of digitalisation and upgrading of digital skills, and on the need for targeted funding of projects related to entrepreneurship and STEM education.

In conclusion, Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said that over the next four years € 55 billion would be invested in education and development of digital skills. According to her, greater visibility of good practices and even more intensive communication among the countries is needed.
