  • Is it compulsory to wear an academic gown?

Gowns, hoods and caps with tassels worn by university graduates and lecturers date back to more than a century ago.

The first European universities were affiliated with the church. Hence, students and lecturers used to wear priest hooded robes on formal occasions.

Caps have undergone modifications and in the course of time they have acquired their distinguished square shape. Tassels are worn to the right. They are moved to the left when graduates are awarded with a Master's Degree.

Graduate students wear scarves, which are actually the modified hoods of the monastic race. They symbolize their commitment to the doctor's profession and the medical community. The scarves of the graduates of Medical University – Varna are of a specific colour.

The Varna higher education institution is the first in the country to introduce wearing gowns and caps with tassels during the graduation ceremony of its students.

If you have chosen to attend the ceremony, you are required to wear the academic gown of MU-Varna. It is not allowed to wear a gown, different from the one of your graduating colleagues.

  • Where can I get my gown from?

You can get your gown, scarf and cap at the Student Affairs Office of the Faculty of Medicine, room 205 on 24th and 25th of November, between 09.00-12.00 and 13.00-16.00. Together with your official apparel, you will get the requested guest passes.
