The Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases was established in October 1961. One of the students of the great Bulgarian clinicist and scientist Prof. Dr. Stoyan Kirkovich - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Stanchev is the founder of the Department, who continued the development of the school, created by Prof. Dr. Stoyan Kirkovich.
Over the years heads of the Department have been:

- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kolyo Denchev
- Assoc. Prof .Dr. Hristo Tsekov
- Since 2001 Prof. Dr. Zhaneta Georgieva has been the head of the Department.
Six specializations in Europe, USA and Japan have been implemented since 1986. The Department members have participated at more than 80 international conferences and co-authored the textbook "Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases", three dissertations have been defended and six PhD students have been enrolled. In addition, two monographs have been published.
