Training and Research Sector (TRS) of Clinical Hematology trains students from 3rd, 4th and 5th medical course, intern - doctors, postgraduates and PhD students.
The study group of Clinical Hematology, headed by Dr. Ilina Micheva, elaborates on the problem of secondary myelodysplastic syndromes and acute leukemias, occurring after chemotherapeutic and radiotherapeutic regimens in patients, previously treated for solid tumors.
The research activities of TRS Clinical Hematology comprise the following areas: early diagnostics, cytogenetic and molecular-biological disorders in myelodysplastic syndromes and acute leukemias; molecular-biological disorders and correlation with angiogenesis in the bone marrow in myeloproliferative neoplasms; leukemia stem cells.
In the Clinic of Hematology, a number of clinical studies on new, effective medications for treatment of malignant blood diseases are conducted. New protease inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, anti-angiogenic drugs, immunomodulators, tyrosine - kinase inhibitors and classical cytostatics are approbated.
All doctors at the Clinic of Hematology are members of the European Hematology Association and the Bulgarian Scientific Society of Clinical Hematology. Some of the members of this team are also members of other established scientific organization: American Society of Hematology, European research groups.
Present head of TRS Haematology and Hematopoiesis Disorders is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liyana Todorova Gercheva.
