Prof. Dr. Zlatislav Stoyanov was born on 30 May 1959 in the city of Varna. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Higher Medical Institute-Varna in 1985. He worked successively as an Assistant Professor, Senior Assistant Professor and Chief Assistant Professor at the Department and TS Physiology from 1987 to 2003. He became an Associate Professor at TS Physiology in 2003, and in 2015 he was elected to the academic position of Professor. He obtained a speciality in Physiology in 1991. And in 2000 he defended a dissertation thesis entitled “Functional Brain Asymmetry: Handedness and Sex". In 2013 after defending a dissertation thesis on “Brain Asymmetry and Left-Handedness: Theories of Origin and Associated Psychophysiological Phenomena", he was awarded the scientific degree Doctor of Sciences (D.Sc.). He was the Head of the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology in the periods 2004–2008 and 2012–2018. From 2018 to 2023 he was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
Author and co-author of four monographs, seven textbooks and teaching aids, and more than 120 publications and scientific reports. He has published in scores of scientific journals: “International Journal of Psychophysiology", “International Journal of Neuroscience", “Laterality: Asymmetries of Body, Brain and Cognition", “Central European Journal of Medicine", “Journal of Evolutionary Biochemistry and Physiology", “Human Physiology", “Acta Neurobiologiae Experimentalis", “Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences", etc. His major scientific developments are in the field of Psychophysiology, Brain Asymmetry and its implications in the behaviour and control of physiological functions.
