Биография

Anton B. Tonchev graduated from the Medical University of Varna in 1998 with a Master's degree in Medicine. From 1998 to 2003, he worked at the Department of Neurosurgery, Kanazawa University, Kanazawa, Japan. In 2003, he defended his PhD dissertation on the topic "Quantity and phenotype of proliferating cells in the post-ischemic brain of adult monkeys". Since 2004, he has been an assistant professor at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Deontology and Cell Biology, and since 2008 at the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology at MU-Varna. In 2007, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences on the topic "Long-term fate and molecular control of endogenous progenitor cells in the adult primate telencephalon". He obtained a Specialy in Anatomy, histology and cytology in 2008.
Since 2009, he was promoted Senior Assistant Professor, and since 2010 - Associate Professor at MU-Varna. Since 2013, he has become full Professor at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. In the period 2012 - 2024, he had served as the Head of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. AB Tonchev is the founder of the elective course in "Neurobiology" at MU-Varna.
Tonchev was a recipient of a Humboldt Scholarship (2009-2011) and a Research Linkage Grant (2014-2017) for the implementation of joint scientific projects with the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Göttingen, Germany. He has over 100 publications with a total impact factor of over 200 (ORCID: 0000-0003-1536-4352), H-index 34 (GScholar: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=opCM8mwAAAAJ&hl=en) and more than 100 participations in national and international scientific forums.
The main scientific direction of Anton B. Tonchev's research are stem cells in the brain, adult neurogenesis and brain regeneration. A. Tonchev is the main organizer of the international conference "Black Sea Neurogenesis": www.blacksea-neuro.org. Tonchev is scientific supervisor or consultant to over 10 PhD students, mainly in the field of neurogenesis. Since 2018 he has been elected as the Director of the Research Institute of MU-Varna.
