The Department trains students in the discipline of Obstetrics and Gynecology from the specialties of Medicine BEO and AEO, Dentistry BEO and AEO, Midwifery, Nursing from the Medical University - Varna and the specialty of Rehabilitation from the Medical College - Varna, interns, doctoral students and postgraduates. The lecturers of the Department have published over 1,200 scientific reports and announcements in Bulgarian and foreign journals and collections.

The Department organizes scientific events of regional and national scale and participates in international symposia, conferences and congresses.

Visits of four highly qualified gynecological and oncogynecological surgeons have been realized, such as Prof. Henry Hugh Allen from Canada, Prof. Neville Hacker - Sydney, Australia, Dr. Randa Akouri - Sweden and Prof. Harald Zurhausen - Nobel Prize in Medicine 2008. Prof. Harald Zurhausen, is a Nobel Prize winner in Medicine for the discovery of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 and type 18, the cause of precancer and cancer of the cervix. At the invitation of Prof. Emil Kovachev in 2019, a visit was made by Dr. Randa Akouri - obstetrician-gynecologist at the University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is part of the team that created the model for heterologous uterus transplantation in women with uterine factor infertility. After 15 years of experimental research in this field, Dr. Akouri and her team gave birth to a live and healthy baby after their first successful uterine transplant in the world.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, together with the Departments of Urology, General and Operative Surgery, Imaging Diagnostics and Pathoanatomy at the Medical University of Varna, organized the First Interdisciplinary Symposium on Pelvic Diseases in 2018. The symposium is the first of its kind, not only at the regional but also at the national level. The scientific program covered the diagnostics, surgical treatment and histological studies of socially significant diseases in the pelvic area.

The Department trains English-speaking students, and also exchanges students under the European Erasmus + program from Germany, Canada and Poland. Individual specializations of students have been implemented. In the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, doctoral theses for the acquisition of the ONS "doctor" have been successfully defended by Dr. Julia Klenske, a doctor who has been working in Germany for many years, and Dr. Velislava Georgieva from Vienna.

Since 1962. To date, a large number of dissertations for the acquisition of the scientific and educational degree "Doctor" and the scientific degree "Doctor of Medical Sciences" have been defended in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Three of the lecturers from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology have recognized inventions and rationalizations. Modern laparoscopic diagnostics and laparoscopic surgery have been implemented in the department.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology develops its scientific research activities in accordance with modern standards in the scientific specialty. Directions for scientific research activities are developed, the results of the scientific activity of the department are periodically analyzed and evaluated and priorities are determined, scientific collegiums are held, to which results of current scientific research are reported and materials for publication are discussed.

The Doctoral Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology has regular program accreditation, granted by a decision of the Accreditation Council of the NATIONAL AGENCY FOR EVALUATION AND ACCREDITATION.​
