Research Activities

The establishment of the Department of Medical Genetics in late 2015, alongside the expansion of its academic staff and the launch of the Center for Cell Therapy and Translational Medicine and the Molecular Pathology Unit, has created favorable conditions for diverse scientific work. The proximity of these facilities enables collaborative research with globally recognized universities across Europe and beyond, offering student exchange opportunities. Research produced at the Translational Medicine and Cell Therapy Center is presented at prestigious international conferences and is subject to patent applications and publication in high-impact journals.

Key research directions include:

  • Cell Therapy and Tissue Engineering:

As the first center of its kind in Eastern Bulgaria, the Center for Translational Medicine and Cell Therapy develops and introduces clinical practices based on the latest stem cell and tissue engineering technologies. Research focuses on the isolation and cultivation of stem cells from various sources and their application in treating medical conditions, including:

    • Processing, storage, and treatment of hematopoietic stem cells for treatment of oncohematological diseases;
  • Molecular Genetic Studies:
    • Genetic diagnostics in children with congenital or inherited disorders.
    • On hereditary neurodegenerative diseases;
    • Genetic prevention approaches in pregnant women and families with reproductive challenges;
    • Oncogenetics.
  • Molecular Oncology and Pharmacogenetics:
    • Development and application of molecular genetic methods in cancer diagnosis and treatment optimization.

Members of the department actively participate in numerous institutional and national research projects, the results of which are presented at various scientific forums
