The Department of Pharmaceutical Technologies was established in April 2014 by an order of the Rector of the Medical University “Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" – Varna.
The department has been headed consecutively by Prof. Bistra Galunska, PhD in Pharmacy, Prof. Kaloyan Georgiev, PhD, DSc in Pharmacy, and currently – by Assoc. Prof. Velichka Andonova, PhD in Pharmacy.
As a core unit of the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Department of Pharmaceutical Technologies provides instruction in the mandatory core subjects: Pharmaceutical Technology, Parts I and II, Biopharmacy and Pharmacokinetics, and Radiopharmacy, which are included in the curriculum for students in the regulated profession “Pharmacy", Master's degree level.
The academic staff organizes and conducts the state examination in Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy for Pharmacy students, participates in teaching students in the “Assistant Pharmacist" program, as well as in postgraduate education programs in Drug Technology with Biopharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy, and Hospital Pharmacy.
Since 2022, the Department of Pharmaceutical Technologies has also served as a training base for PhD students in the doctoral program “Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy."
After the Pharmacognosy Unit was transferred to the Department of Biology in 2018, the structural units of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technologies include:
- Unit of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy
- Unit of Radiopharmacy
The Unit of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy is located in the Medical College building and includes four laboratories for practical exercises in the taught subjects and two scientific laboratories for research by academic staff and doctoral students. The Radiopharmacy Unit is based at the University Hospital “St. Marina".
