Assoc. Prof. Lyubomira Koeva-Dimitrova completed secondary education at the Seventh High School "Maurice Thorez" in Varna, specializing in German and English. In 1998, she graduated with a Master's degree in Accounting, Analysis, and Control at the University of Economics of Varna. In 2013, she defended her doctoral thesis "Accounting Challenges in the Activities of Healthcare Institutions" at the same university and obtained a PhD in "Accounting, Control, and Analysis of Economic Activity" in professional field 3.8. Economics.
In 2005, she acquired a specialization in "Health Economics" at the Medical University – Varna. She has completed various training courses and specializations in health insurance and finance, hospital accounting, hospital management, healthcare financing, health technology assessment, NLP, coaching, and more (USA, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Bulgaria). Assoc. Prof. Koeva is also a certified mediator registered with the Ministry of Justice of Bulgaria.
She began her academic career in 2000, when after winning a competition, she became a full-time Assistant Professor at the Department of Healthcare Management. From 2000 to 2016, she successively held the positions of Assistant, Senior Assistant, and Chief Assistant. Since 2016, she became a full-time Associate Professor at the Department of Healthcare Economics and Management. In 2019, she was appointed Head of the Teaching Sector of Health Economics and Financial Analyses, and in December 2023, she was elected Head of the Department of Healthcare Economics and Management.
Assoc. Prof. Koeva-Dimitrova holds lectures in the following programs: Healthcare Management, Pharmaceutical Management, Optometrist, Biomedical Engineering and Technologies, at Bachelor's and Master's degree levels. She is involved in the training of PhD students in Organization and Management in Healthcare, as well as graduate students in Health Economics. Assoc. Prof. Lyubomira Koeva-Dimitrova is a member of the State Examination Board in Health Economics. She is a lecturer in professional training and postgraduate courses in Healthcare Management, Dental Assistant, etc.
She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Economics – Varna.
Since 2002, she participated in scientific, educational, and practical national and international projects (e.g. Bulgarian-Swiss Hospital Management Project - intergovernmental agreement between the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Canton of Ticino; Joint Master's Program in Health Management - Medical University of Varna and Maastricht University; Establishment of a hospital benchmarking network - collaboration between Inselspital Bern and University Hospital "St. Marina" Varna; Assessment of the health system in Bulgaria: efficiency, equity, sustainability, etc.) funded by the European Commission, World Health Organization, World Bank, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Open Society Foundation, Bulgaria, etc.
She was a member of the Health Technology Assessment Working Group at the National Center for Public Health and Analysis, Ministry of Health (2016–2018), and the "Pharmaceutical Policy and Medical Devices" working group under the "Partnership for Health" Council (Council of Ministers of Bulgaria, 2015–2018).
She also served on the Ethics Committee of the Naval Hospital in Varna under the Military Medical Academy (2008–2013).
Academic Awards:
- Certificate of High Scientific Achievement from the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria in the field of social sciences – team award (2019);
- Two diploma theses under her supervision were awarded prizes by Varna Municipality in the "Best Thesis" competition (2017) – one in Economics and one in Humanities.
Publications: Assoc. Prof. Koeva-Dimitrova is the author of over 65 scientific publications in Bulgaria and abroad, with more than 260 citations. She is author and co-author of seven monographs, two textbooks, and three collections. Her main research interests include management and hospital accounting, financial analysis, assessment of healthcare institutions' financial status, health system analysis and performance assessment.
