The Organization of the First Donor Situation for This Year in Our Country Was Taken Over by a Team of Varna University Hospital

46-year-old female patient with brain death saved the lives of four severely ill patients after her family had decided to donate the organs.

The first donor situation for 2015 occurred during the weekend at St. Marina University Hospital in Varna. Prof. Viliyan Platikanov - Head of the Clinic of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care and his team took over the organization and management of the Donor event. A team from Austria arrived urgently to explant the lung, and a few hours later it was transplanted into a patient in Vienna. Kidneys were transplanted into two patients in Alexandrovska Hospital and the liver saved the life of a patient at the Military Medical Academy.

Pursuant to an agreement between the Executive Agency for Transplantation and Hospital AKH Vienna, one Bulgarian patient will be transplanted for each 2 or 3 lungs sent from Bulgaria. (Currently lung transplantation is not performed in our country.) This agreement is of crucial significance for patients with pulmonary hypertension and cystic fibrosis in our country. A lung was transplanted into a Bulgarian patient at the end of 2013 in Vienna. At present there is another fellow citizen with pulmonary hypertension in Vienna who is expecting lung transplantation.
