History and Facts

The Department was established in 1961 by Associate Professor Dr. Alexander Stanchev, a follower of the renowned clinician and scholar - Dr. Stoyan Kirkovich. In the following years, the Department was successively led by Associate Professor Dr. Todorov (1971–1975) and Associate Professor Dr. Kolyo Denchev (1976–1985).

In 1984, two specialized clinical units were formed within the Department:

  • The First Clinic, led by Associate Professor Kolyo Denchev, with a focus on allergology
  • The Second Clinic, headed by Associate Professor Dr. Yordan Vasilev, with a specialization in rheumatology and cardiology

In 1986, Associate Professor Dr. Hristo Tsekov became head of the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases at the First Clinic. Within this clinic, two subdivisions were created: one for medical oncotherapy and another for cardio-pulmonary diseases.

From 1992 to 1999, the Second Clinic was led by Associate Professor Dr. Mihail Deliyski.

From 2001 to 2015, the Department was headed by Professor Dr. Zhaneta Georgieva.

For the period 2015-2017 the position has been held by Associate Professor Dr. Branimir Kanazirev and consequently by Professor Dr. Ivan Shterev and Associate Professor Dr. Eleonora Dimitrova.

Since 2020, the Department has been under the leadership of Associate Professor Dr. Maria Dimova.

The Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine offers instruction in the subject Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine, included in the curriculum for third-year medical students. The discipline focuses on introducing the diagnostic approach to the patient, encompassing core physical examination methods, as well as the application of advanced imaging and instrumental diagnostic techniques. The primary goal is  students to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills in physical examination, which will serve as a foundation for further development in their clinical education.
