Office of Technology Transfer and Innovation (OTTI)

The Office of Technology Transfer and Innovation (OTTI) was established at the Scientific Research Institute of the Medical University - Varna (MU-Varna) by decision of the Academic Council dated April 20, 2022.

What is Technology Transfer?

Technology transfer (TT) is the movement of knowledge and discoveries from the research setting to the public for the benefit of society. This occurs in many ways, but, for the purposes of this guide, tech transfer refers to the formal licensing of MU-Varna Intellectual Property (IP) to third parties, whether established industry players or new startup companies.

What is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual property (IP) describes property that results from the human intellect. In the MU-Varna context, this includes any new and useful process, machine, composition of matter, life form, article of manufacture, software, copyrighted work, tangible property, all in the fields of biotechnology, diagnostics, clinics, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare. It is created when something new and useful has been conceived or developed, or when unusual, unexpected, or non-obvious results, obtained with an existing invention, can be practiced for some useful purpose.

The main OTTI tasks are:

  • Supporting and coordinating the provision of legal and administrative protection of IP and innovation management for researchers at MU-Varna;
  • Conducting an analysis of the needs of MU-Varna researchers regarding their readiness and need for assistance in creating IPs (i.e. registering patents, utility models, industrial designs, trademarks, copyright registration, documentation, and registration of university "know-how" etc.)
  • Informing and advising on opportunities for implementing pilot projects for TT in business and TT from university scholars and experts to businesses;
  • Organizing training on the creation of IP, TT, and related activities;
  • Assisting in the process of IP registration, licensing out of specific medical services.

The team of OTTI includes experts in the field of financial and capital markets, investment policies, and biotech innovations: Vasil Karaivanov and Kostadin Gramatikov. Technical assistance is provided by Gergana Ignatova.

Our mission at OTTI is to bring the benefits of academic discoveries at MU-Varna to the world and to translate science to practice. That starts with you, our inventors, whose research is pushing the boundaries of innovation and creating hope for humanity.

Thank you for your interest in this work — it is our privilege to be your partner.
