New Organ Donor Situation at "St. Marina"-Varna Has Brought Back to Life Two Seriously Ill Bulgarians

Yesterday, at the operating rooms at UMHAT "St. Marina" in Varna, another organ donor situation was accomplished. The family of a 54-year-old woman, who was diagnosed with brain death as a result of intracerebral hemorrhage, made the noble decision to give an opportunity for a new life to two seriously ill Bulgarian citizens. "Today's organ donor situation has been a result of 40-hour work by the teams of "St. Marina" - Varna," said Prof. Dr. Vilian Platikanov, Head of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Clinic.

The Executive Agency for Transplantation (EAT) coordinated the teams at Military Medical Academy and Aleksandrovska University Hospital, which were transported on board of airplane C-27J "Spartan" by the Bulgarian Air Force to UMHAT "St. Marina"-Varna, where the organs were explanted. Later on Prof. Vladov's team at MMA performed a liver transplant on a 31-year-old patient, and Prof. Yanev's team performed a kidney transplant on a 54-year-old man at Aleksandrovska University Hospital.

EAT and the medical teams at University Hospital "St. Marina" - Varna, MMA-Sofia and Aleksandrovska University Hospital express their condolences to the relatives, as well as their respect for them for the humane decision made at this hard moment.
