For the First Time a Team at the University Hospital in Varna Has Performed Surgeries with a Modern Generation CO2 Laser

"Imagine a scalpel, whose blade is as big as the tip of a pin. Now, imagine a scalpel that is ten times sharper than the tip of a pin." This state-of-the-art scalpel enables Assoc. Prof. Nikolay Sapundzhiev and the team at the Ear-Nose-Throat Clinic at University Hospital "St. Marina" in Varna to perform extremely fine and precise cuts on any kind of tissue in the head and neck area. A cutting and at the same time coagulating tool for elegant and sparing surgical intervention, the carbon dioxide laser has been applied in a variety of conditions - both severe pathology and purely aesthetic interventions. That kind of laser has been used in Varna for the first time. Although this is the testing stage, the early results have exceeded the team's expectations.

The modern scalpel allows for extremely precise removal of skin and soft tissue tumors. With the help of the high-tech instrument, Assoc. Prof. Sapundzhiev has performed soft tissue plastic surgery in the pharynx in a patient having difficulty breathing and snoring. The laser can be used both in newborns and elderly people. "Our youngest patient now is 3 years old - he needs intervention because of tonsil hypertrophy." The oldest patient of Prof. Sapundzhiev's team is an 80-year-old patient with a cutaneous ear tumor.
