Prestigious National Award for a Young Scientist and Lecturer from MU-Varna

Dr. Tatyana Chalakova, PhD – Chief Assistant Professor at the First Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of MU-Varna, was honoured with a prestigious award by the Bulgarian Hypertension League (BHL). She obtained the 2023 BHL Young Researcher Award named after Prof. Dr. Rahneva. The award is conferred on Dr. Chalakova for merits in the field of prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Chalakova is a part of a multidisciplinary team conducting research focused on cardiovascular risk in patients with long-standing type 1 diabetes. The team has won a scientific project under the Scientific Research Fund of the Ministry of Education and Culture, headed by Prof. Violeta Yotova and under the Science Fund of MU-Varna, headed by Prof. Yoto Yotov. The young scientist has demonstrated that this group of individuals is characterised with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and consequently early preventive measures need to be taken. These people more often develop arterial hypertension, their vascular age tends to be higher than their chronological age, and they more often have calcium deposits in the heart vessels. The outcomes of the study have been published in a number of prestigious medical journals and presented at scientific forums in our country and abroad.

The award was presented to Dr. Chalakova by the Chairman of BHL Prof. Dr. Arman Postadzhiyan, PhD, during the Scientific Symposium Arteriale: Hypertension with international participation, which took place on 22-24 March 2024 in Sofia.  We congratulate Dr. Chalakova on her achievement, and we believe that this will be the beginning of a series of new and higher achievements that contribute to the enhancement of the prestige of MU-Varna!
