There are
eight scientific and research projects at the Department financed by the following: 7
th Framework Programme of EU, the Executive Agency for Health and Consumers at EC, COST, Bulgarian Science Fund and Fund "Medical Science" for the period 2007-2013.
A Laboratory of nutrigenomics, functional food and nutraceuticals, associated partner of the
Nutrigenomics Organisation was established at the Department in 2007. In 2007
Fundamental and applied studies in the field of molecular nutrition and nutrigenomics to facilitate the implementation of the state policy related to the nutrition and public health were carried out in the Department. As an example for research with applied nature and direct impact on human health are
the relation between diet, genetic factors and metabolic disorders accompanying obesity, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart and vascular diseases. The effects are being studied of the antioxidants, plant foods and biologically active substances on the metabolic adaptation in humans, model systems of cell cultures and experimental animals. One of the main scientific research fields of the Department is the
study of the biological effects of the Bulgarian medicinal plants.
