The medical laboratory technician is a health specialist with a multidisciplinary qualification, whose knowledge, skills and specific competencies allow graduates to work in: clinical, microbiological, histological, parasitological, immunological and other medical-diagnostic, scientific-research and specialized laboratories.
The specialty "Medical Laboratory Technician" at Medical College Varna was opened in 1963 and since then, over 700 medical laboratory technicians have graduated and work in laboratories in the region and throughout the country, as well as in other European countries.
The clinical training of students is carried out in training facilities and laboratories equipped with the most actual medical equipment and devices. Student-oriented modern educational methods are used to develop creativity and imagination. Individual workplaces assure progress of personal qualities and skills and individualization of the training approach.
The main bases for training in the profiled disciplines are the technologically modern laboratories of the University Hospital "St. Marina", where, under the guidance of mentors, young laboratory assistants improve their practical skills and develop their organizational culture.
The curricula and teaching methods are in line with modern European and world standards, in sync with the dynamics and requirements of the constantly changing business environment. The management of Medical University and Medical College actively stimulate the participation of students in scientific research activities and projects, which strengthens the interest in the profession and is a prerequisite for more in-depth training.
Students have the opportunity to participate in student mobility under Erasmus+.
Graduates of the specialty "Medical Laboratory Assistant" acquire the educational and qualification degree "professional bachelor" and can continue their studies to acquire the educational and qualification degree "bachelor" or "master" in the specialty "Healthcare Management" and "Public Health".
For continuing qualification, postgraduate education courses are provided.

Research activity
Students and lecturers from the Training sector of Medical Laboratory Assistant traditionally participate in the conferences of Medical College Varna. According to their scientific interests and areas of professional realization, lecturers from the sector present their research at international and national conferences. The most visited are IMAB, Congress of Microbiologists in Bulgaria, etc. For the period 2017 - 2025, 25 joint participations with students and 21 publications were realized. The teaching staff has over 150 publications in Bulgarian and international journals.
