The 40th Anniversary of the Museum of the History of Medicine Will Be Celebrated on 25 April

The 40th anniversary of the Museum of the History of Medicine will be celebrated on 25 April (Friday) at 11 a.m. in the courtyard of the first charity hospital in Bulgaria, at 7 Paraskeva Nikolaou Str.

The idea of establishing a museum arose in 1969 among the Varna medical community during the celebration of the centennial anniversary of the foundation of the charity hospital, built with the funds of the Varna resident Paraskeva Nikolaou. The idea grew into a decision of the Executive Committee of the Varna Regional Council in 1978. The hospital was designated as the site of the new museum. The complex consisting of a Renaissance building and a chapel were restored and declared a cultural monument in 1982 by the National Institute for Monuments of Culture.

The task of creating a Museum of the History of Medicine was assigned to Dr. Ivan Kapinchev. He defined the concept of the museum exhibition and coordinated the activities of the teams of specialists. Eminent archaeologists, anthropologists, ethnographers, historians, pharmacists, medical historians, architects, etc. worked in collaboration. The museum opened in 1985. It was originally a unit of the Institute of Health Education – Sofia, with the status of “Museum Collection on the History of Medicine". The public collection “History of Medicine on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast" (Museum of the History of Medicine) has been part of the structure of the Medical University “Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" – Varna since the end of 2016.
