Students and Lecturers at Medical College – Varna Celebrated the Day of the Bulgarian Pharmacist

An emotional, professionally prepared and eventful holiday for the Day of the Bulgarian Pharmacist was organised by the students, lecturers and the management of TS Assistant Pharmacist at Medical College – Varna. The celebration of Enyovden (Midsummer's Day) has turned into a traditional annual holiday for the future pharmacists, and this year it was hosted by the Museum of the History of Medicine in the Sea Capital. In 2022, the College celebrated its 80th anniversary, and the events during the celebration were dedicated to this remarkable anniversary. How exactly is healing tea prepared, what do the herbs that nature gives us help with – these were some of the questions in the quiz and the topics of games, where the participants were divided into three student teams: White Yarrow, Most Beautiful, and Botox. All participants received prizes, and each attendee was given a bunch of herbs and healing soap of lavender, rosemary and essential oils, specially prepared in the laboratories of the Medical College.

"Enyovden is one of the most remarkable holidays in the Bulgarian folk calendar – the day of healing herbs," pointed out during the holiday Prof. Antoaneta Tsvetkova, Director of Medical College – Varna. It is believed that on this day the energy of the sun is most powerful and is magically transmitted to the water and to the healing herbs. Therefore, the main rituals are welcoming the sunrise, bathing in the dew or nearby river, picking herbs and making wreaths and bunches of herbs. Herbs should be picked before sunrise, when they are most healing. Bulgarian pharmacists are also celebrating on this day. The colleagues from TS Assistant Pharmacist weaved a wreath. All the guests at our celebration passed under it. Tradition dictates that this wreath should be preserved until the following year, and every sick person should take some of the herbs to be cured. I wish everyone to find his/her herb for health, happiness, peace, prosperity and luck on this day," added Prof. Tsvetkova.

The rich educational, cultural, creative and entertainment program was complemented by the flight of а flock of white pigeons, symbolising the idea – to continue using the healing benefits of the native land under a peaceful sky.

The students demonstrated enviable knowledge about herbs on the Northern Black Sea coast – identifying, picking, storage, safe use and their impact on health.
