The first working meeting of Scientific Group “Nutrition and Neurodevelopment (NutriLect)" on the recently launched large-scale strategic research and innovation project “Increasing Translational Achievements in Medicine", where MU-Varna is a partner, took place on 14th and 15th June 2023. Prof. Dr. Cohen Hussentruit – Head of the Paediatric Gastroenterology Clinic at University Hospital-Brussels and Lut Gabe Shelpe – a speech therapist at University Hospital-Brussels were invited to share their experience with nutritional interventions for children with autism and cerebral palsy.
The guests delivered two lectures at MU-Varna on the following topics: “Enteral Nutrition, Nutritional Interventions and Nutritional Difficulties in Children with Cerebral Palsy", lectured by Prof. Dr. Koen Huysentruyt and “Dysphagia in Children with Neurological Diseases", lecturered by Lut Gabe. More than 50 clinical specialists, speech therapists, lecturers and students attended the lectures.
During their visit to MU-Varna the specialists from Belgium presented several clinical cases in front of the participants in NutriLect Scientific Group. Algorithms for nutritional support for neurologically impaired children were discussed. Considerable emphasis was also placed on the role of speech therapists in overcoming swallowing disorders in these patients. Prof. Dr. Hussentruit and Lut Gabe also consulted several children with autism and cerebral palsy in Karin Dom.
