From 27 to 29 March 2026, Medical University–Varna hosted the Sixth International Symposium on Adipobiology and Adipopharmacology—a prestigious scientific forum that attracted prominent specialists from Europe, Asia, and America. The event was held within the framework of the MUVE-TEAM project and reinforced Varna's position as an important centre for scientific exchange in the field of metabolic diseases.

The Symposium brought together experts from Japan, Italy, India, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Austria, Mexico, and Bulgaria, who presented the latest scientific achievements and discussed future directions in research on adipose tissue and related diseases.

"Everything related to adipose tissue is extremely relevant. Within the Symposium, not only research developments on adipose tissue itself were presented but also on its clinical connection with a number of diseases. The latest trends in the treatment of dysfunctional adipose tissue were also showcased," underlined Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonia Kisheva from the Training Sector of Cardiology at the First Department of Internal Medicine at MU–Varna.

Special attention in the scientific programme was placed on the development and metabolic programming of adipose tissue from early childhood, the relation between obesity and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as its interaction with the cardiovascular system, muscles, and oncological processes. The forum was also focused on innovative approaches related to the use of artificial intelligence in histological analysis, and new scientific data on the role of lipids and oxygen in cellular processes.

The Symposium also paid tribute to the contribution of Prof. Dr. Georgi Chaldakov—one of the pioneers in adipose tissue research, who more than two decades ago laid the foundations of this scientific field and united the international scientific community. Today, adipobiology is among the most dynamically developing fields in medicine.

The main goal of the event was to promote international cooperation and the exchange of knowledge in the fight against metabolic diseases—one of the most serious challenges to public health on a global scale.

The 6th International Symposium on Adipobiology and Adipopharmacology took place within the framework of Project No. BG-RRP-2.004-0009-C02 of MU–Varna "Enhancement of Translational Excellence Achievement in Medicine (MUVE-TEAM)", funded by the European Union–NextGenerationEU, through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Republic of Bulgaria.
