The Executive Director of St. Ekaterina University Hospital in Sofia, President of the Bulgarian Society of Cardiology and national consultant on Cardiac Surgery Prof. Dr. Gencho Nachev was awarded the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Medical University – Varna. The official award ceremony was held today, 23.05.2018, at the First Auditorium at MU-Varna.
The high academic honour was conferred upon Prof. Dr. Gencho Nachev for his outstanding merit in the creation and development of the Cardiac Surgery Clinic at UMHAT "St. Marina" - Varna, as well as for the implementation of the most modern methods of training in the field of Cardiac Surgery at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and Angiology at the University.
In his academic lecture "Cardiac Surgery in Bulgaria: Past, Present and Future - from Disappointment to Satisfaction" Prof. Nachev outlined the development and achievements of the Cardiac Surgery in Bulgaria. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Zlatislav Stoyanov extended gratitude to Prof. Nachev. After that Prof. Nachev and the Rector of the University planted a silver spruce in the University courtyard - a symbol of longevity, eternity and spiritual growth.
Prof. Nachev acquired the specialty of Cardiac Surgery at Medical University - Sofia. During the same year, 1999, he acquired the specialty of Cardiovascular Surgery at the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, becoming a Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (FETCS). He has specialised in Germany, the USA and England. He has been training medical students and postgraduate students in Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery. He was a member of the Scientific Committee of the Higher Attestation Commission (HAC) for two terms of office (until 2010).
In 2005 Prof. Nachev had a key role in the creation of the Cardiac Surgery Clinic at University Hospital "St. Marina" in Varna. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov, Director of University Hospital "St. Marina" at the time, and with the support of Minister Bogoev, MPs, people, working in the field of business, administration and public figures, in a very short time, the Cardiac Surgery Clinic in Varna was built and equipped. On 15th June 2005 the first open-heart surgery had already become a fact at the new Cardiac Surgery Clinic. It was performed by Prof. Dr. Gencho Nachev, together with his team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, surgery and resuscitation nurses. During the same year Prof. Nachev organized the training of the future staff of the Clinic.
Official guests at the ceremony for awarding Prof. Nachev with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of MU-Varna were Prof. Dr. Anelia Klisarova, DSc - Member of the 44th National Assembly, the Deputy Mayor of Varna Municipality Mr. Kosta Basitov, members of the Board of Trustees at MU-Varna Prof. Dr. Krasimira Kisyova, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgi Marinov, PhD, Prof. Dr. Temelko Temelkov, DSc, the Chairperson of the Healthcare Commission at Municipal Council - Varna Assoc. Prof. Antoaneta Tsvetkova, the Executive Director of UMHAT "St. Marina" - Varna Prof. Dr. Valentin Ignatov, the Director of National Revenue Agency - Varna Mr. Chavdar Yankov.
On the eve of 24th May - the Day of the Bulgarian Culture and Slavonic Alphabet, the Rector of Medical University - Varna Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov also conferred the 16th consecutive awards - Honorary Blue Ribbon Insignia upon outstanding lecturers.
