Prof. Dr. Emil Kovachev has been elected the new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at MU–Varna. He was elected by an unequivocal majority at a meeting of the General Assembly of the Faculty of Medicine, which took place on 16 September in Auditorium I of the University. Prof. Kovachev has held the position of Vice-Dean for Research and Career Development at the Faculty of Medicine since 2023.
The Faculty has appointed three Vice-Deans: Prof. Dr. Hristo Kozhuharov – Vice-Dean for Research and Career Development; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Dimova – Vice-Dean for Accreditation, Quality and Assessment; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Silviya Gancheva – Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs and International Cooperation. They were elected by secret ballot by the Faculty Council, which convened immediately following the election of the new Dean.

Prof. Kovachev outlined his principal priorities in his capacity as Dean: the modernisation of the educational process; the expansion of practical training at simulation centres in university and clinical healthcare settings and through hands-on clinical experience; the promotion of research activity and support for early-career researchers and students; and enhancement and further development of partnerships and international cooperation.
The General Assembly adopted with applause the report presented by the outgoing Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Yoto Yotov, encompassing the period from April 2023 to June 2026. Particular emphasis was placed on the enhancement of publication activity, the expansion of the research capacity of the Faculty, the sustained interest among prospective students in the Bulgarian- and English-Language Training Programmes of the Faculty of Medicine, as well as the continuous renewal and modernisation of its material and technical infrastructure.
Prof. Dr. Emil Kovachev graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of MU–Varna in 1998 and obtained his specialist qualification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2003. He was actively engaged in clinical practice at Specialized Obstetrics and Gynaecology Hospital for Active Treatment (SOGHAT) “Prof. Dr. D. Stamatov" EOOD – Varna until the beginning of 2016, and since February 2016 to the present, he has served as its Managing Director.
He was awarded the educational and scientific degree of Doctor (PhD) in 2011 and was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at MU–Varna in 2012. Prof. Dr. Emil Kovachev obtained the scientific degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences in 2016, and he was appointed Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at MU–Varna in 2017. Prof. Kovachev has also held a Master's Degree in Health Management since 2007.
From 2016 to 2024, Prof. Kovachev served as Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at MU–Varna. He was the national consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for North-Eastern Bulgaria from 2013 to 2018. In 2022 he was awarded the honorary distinction “Obstetrician-Gynaecologist of Bulgaria", conferred on the initiative of the Bulgarian Medical Association and the Bulgarian Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
