Leading specialists and physicians with a shared interest in modern methods for diagnostics and surgical treatment of foot and ankle disorders and injuries participated in an international course organised by MU–Varna. The course was held on 2–3 July. It was organised by the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and hosted by UMHAT “St. Marina" – Varna.
The course was intended both for orthopaedic and trauma surgery residents and experienced orthopaedic surgeons seeking to enhance their theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in one of the most rapidly evolving areas of orthopaedics. The event attracted participants from across Bulgaria and abroad. The lecturers were renowned specialists from Switzerland, Germany, Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria.
“Technologies are evolving at an extraordinary pace, virtually by the hour, while the focus of this course is the foot—the most sensitive part of the human body, which, often without our awareness, determines the way we move and our overall quality of life. The proper treatment of foot and ankle disorders is the central topic of this course," emphasised Prof. Dr. Dimitar Raykov, DSc – a leading specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology and Rector of MU–Varna.
The scientific programme included renowned lecturers representing the Bulgarian Foot and Ankle Society, the German Foot and Ankle Society (GFFC), and the Balkan Foot and Ankle Society (BAFAS). The international participation created opportunities for exchange of expertise, presentation of state-of-the-art surgical techniques, and discussions on best clinical practices.
According to Prof. Dr. Silva Andonova, Executive Director of UMHAT “St. Marina" – Varna, the course provided immense benefits for young specialists. “It is an honour for us that so many colleagues from such a wide range of departments and clinics across Bulgaria and abroad have joined us once again this year. The exchange of expertise and the discussion of clinical cases that are particularly challenging to diagnose and treat represent the path forward, enabling us to continue improving the quality of diagnostics and treatment we provide to our patients."
“The course focuses on minimally invasive surgical procedures, primarily involving the foot, as these techniques facilitate faster patient recovery and achieve better clinical outcomes," emphasised Assoc. Prof. Dr. Preslav Penev from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at MU–Varna and a specialist at the Orthopaedics Clinic of UMHAT “St. Marina"–Varna.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanas Katsarov, Chairperson of the Bulgarian and Balkan Foot and Ankle Society, underscored that the second course involved significant participation by lecturers, and the trend is for such training to become a tradition, with continuous enhancement of knowledge, skills, experience, and surgical techniques.
The two-day programme comprised lectures, surgical procedures, discussions of real clinical cases, and a workshop using artificial bone models, providing participants with the opportunity to acquire and hone essential surgical techniques under the guidance of internationally reputed experts.
The aim of the course was to further strengthen the position of MU–Varna as a centre of excellence for high-quality postgraduate education and professional development of medical specialists by creating opportunities for interaction among scientific research, medical education, and clinical practice.
